Use of Space & Time

Personalized learning and project-based learning require changes in the way instructional time is used and in the way the learning space is designed. To dive deeper into learning, the constraints of locked-in 45-50 minute content-silo periods pose a challenge.  Instead, with careful planning, having the ability to use time flexibly allows learners to work fluently and explore essential and driving questions without interruptions.  Like the need for flexibility with time, learning spaces too must be flexible and diverse.  Having traditional desks situated in a row does not allow for collaboration.  Furniture and furniture configuration must change to match the activity.  Additionally, by having spaces such as maker and STEAM labs gives students the resources and equipment to create prototypes and models to solve problems through an iterative process.
